Preferably FREE programs, but a list of programs available from stores is also good. Thank you in advance.

Industry standard software comes from Adobe in the form of Photoshop and Illustrator. The two do overlap to some degree in what they do but Photoshop is predominantly raster based drawing and photo manipulation where Illustrator is vector based drawing. Illustrator vector files can be scaled up to any size without loss of quality or pixellation problems. Between them these two packages can handle anything you care to think of.

Free open source alternatives would be Gimp and Inkscape.

I understand I am comparing apples and oranges in a way. For my use I had originally gotten my Ipad as a netbook/sketchpad replacement. The sketching capabilities were OK but without wacom and a blunt pogo stylus it made it a bit hard to use all the time. I did a bit of research online to find a slate pc that was small like the Ipad and easy to carry with full windows (came with XP and I changed it to windows 7). With all the rage of slates coming out this year I was not sure if I wanted to dish out more money I do not have. Plus with the all the slate hype I have been seeing that the trend is to drop the stylus all together to copy the Ipad which does not work for me. I needed something that I could sketch but not have to take my larger tablet pc. I love my toshiba tablet pc, but it is heavier, takes a little while to turn on and it is a much bigger device that would not fit in my purse. When I found the Ls800 it filled the perfect niche I was after plus the price was right. If you look for motion computing ls800’s on ebay you can find them for about $200+. You can also buy 12 inch models for a bit more, but I wanted small and portable.

The ls800 has worked out great in combination with the Ipad. The ipad is great to surf the net, check email, do pretty much everything I did on my netbook. But I can keep both on but draw on a wacom accurate screen and save it.

art programs I suggest that work great on the ls800:

-SAI
-Open Canvas
-Sketchbook
-Art Rage

(only art program that has shown some slight lag has been photoshop)

-Photoshop 7 and above (it can lag from time to time so I only use it for some minor things here and there. Turn off anything that might hog the memory as it will improve with the lag).

I have yet to test painter and a few others, but once I do I should be able to post about it.

I will be changing this one to an SSD for a faster start up, better battery life and cooler in general (the computer runs a bit hot, as it does not have a fan).

I know Virginia Commonwealth University has a highly accredited art program and it is not just an art school! It’s a huge school and has an urban campus, but I guess it’s considered to be in the south.
I’m actually looking for the same thing you are, so far all I have found is VCU. =/

Universities on the east coast with very good art programs include:
- Rutgers (Mason Gross School of the Arts)
- Syracuse
- Rensselaer Polytechnic (if your thing is digital media)
- Carnegie Mellon
- Boston University
- Rochester Institute of Technology
- Virginia Commonwealth
- Tufts University (via its partnership with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston)
- Northeastern University (via its own partnership with the SMFA, Boston, as well)
- Brown University (via its relationship with RISD)
- Brandeis University
- Pratt Institute (great art school with a limited number of other majors)
- Temple U
- Drexel U
- Columbia University
- University of Georgia
- NYU
- U Pennsylvania

And these schools are pretty darn good, but not considered quite as strong as the above in most art fields:
- Louisiana State U
- U Tennessee Knoxville
- Penn State University Park
- North Carolina State U

Not a lot of very good ones in Florida, actually. The best is probably at Florida State. FSU has a great film/tv program – one of the best in the US – and their art programs are otherwise fine but not super shiny.

I was going to say deviantart too. It’s a pretty nice site, and it’s good feeling knowing people are srring your art. But really, it won’t help you much if you want to be a better artist. Most people comment with "That’s really good!" etc, not "I think it’d be better if you shaded more darkly". It’s not really helpful, sadly. And usually, you won’t get much views unless you’re really, really good. But it does give you this kind of sense of.. accomplishment? lol I dunno, and you can talk to people on the forums on tips and such. Otherwise, just try tutorials online. I don’t know any specific websites, but you can try googling it and see what you come up with. Best of luck!

Most do use computers. However several artists do draw from scratch. There’s a great ‘tutorial’ over on the artists site who does For Better Or Worse.
